MAR 2025 — BODY STORY: Art of Improv

The Memory Cult March project is Body Story: Art of improv, which invites artists to ‘photograph a moving subject as quickly as possible, exploring the art of improvisation in photo craft’.

I had planned to shoot a roll of film and chase my son around outdoors while he moved to some of his favorite songs (currently anything by Fatboy Slim). However, it seems my film camera is now faulty after an unfortunate drop, and it needs repairs. I’m coming to terms with the fact that I’ll need to spend money to either repair or replace it, neither of which are ideal options for the coming months.

On top of that, my son was sick for nearly all of March, catching every virus a toddler could find and generously passing them along to me and his father. After being cooped up inside for about a week and a half, I reached out to a friend and asked if I could photograph her for Body Story instead.

We didn’t know what to expect. I packed my Fuji XT2, some fabric I had lying around, and plastic bags since it was pouring rain. We drove around looking for a place to shoot and stumbled upon a local garden hosting a sculpture exhibit. The rain cleared, and the sun broke through above the mountains. We danced, laughed, and it was exactly what my soul needed—time to create and breathe, away from the responsibilities of being a mother to a wonderfully wild little boy.

This is what we made together.
